BBF Healthcare Shipment Expands Access to Medical Care in the Dominican Republic

A 40-foot healthcare container shipped by Brother’s Brother Foundation is improving access to essential medicines, medical supplies, and equipment for vulnerable patients across the Dominican Republic through BBF’s longstanding partnership with Food For The Poor and the Asociacion Dominicana de la Orden de Malta (ADOM).

Loaded in March 2026, the shipment included approximately 982,800 doses of pharmaceutical products used to treat conditions including acne, benign prostatic hyperplasia, seizure disorders, and nausea and vomiting. In addition to medicines, the container carried a variety of medical supplies and equipment, including four adjustable hospital beds that are now helping improve patient care throughout the country.

The donated resources are being distributed by ADOM, an organization established in 1994 that provides medicines and medical supplies to more than 250 hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, children’s homes, and nonprofit organizations throughout the Dominican Republic. ADOM also operates two primary care clinics serving vulnerable communities in Haina and Herrera, providing comprehensive healthcare and preventive services to individuals with limited access to medical care.

One of the adjustable hospital beds from the shipment has already made a meaningful difference for a nine-year-old girl named Alanna.

Earlier this year, Alanna was hospitalized for three months after developing a rare immune-mediated neurological disease that caused frequent seizures, loss of consciousness, and significant neurological damage. Although she survived the critical stage of her illness, she is now bedridden, receives nutrition through a gastrostomy tube, and depends entirely on her family for daily care.

Just days before the shipment arrived, physicians at one of ADOM’s clinics learned that Alanna urgently needed a hospital bed at home. After the container reached the Dominican Republic, one of the donated beds was delivered directly to her family.

According to Food For The Poor, the adjustable hospital bed has significantly improved Alanna’s comfort, hygiene, and safety while reducing the risk of pressure injuries and other complications associated with long-term immobility. It has also made daily caregiving easier for her family by reducing the physical demands of moving and assisting her.

“Now we will be able to care for her better and keep her more comfortable,” Alanna’s mother shared. “This bed has been a blessing for our family.”

While Alanna’s story reflects the impact of a single piece of equipment, it also represents the broader purpose of the shipment. The medicines, medical supplies, and equipment included in the container are helping strengthen healthcare services throughout the Dominican Republic, where many families continue to face barriers to accessing timely, affordable medical care.

Brother’s Brother Foundation is grateful to Food For The Poor and ADOM for their partnership in ensuring these donated resources reach patients and healthcare facilities where they are needed most.
