BBF Supports Mobile Pharmacy Van in Western North Carolina
When Hurricane Helene swept through Western North Carolina, it exposed more than damaged roads and disrupted power. It revealed how quickly thousands of rural residents could lose access to essential medications. In response, the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is launching its first Mobile Pharmacy—a fully equipped vehicle designed to deliver vital medications directly to patients across the region.
BBF is proud to support this project, which represents both an emergency solution and a long-term investment in rural healthcare resilience. The Mobile Pharmacy will extend access to essential medications and pharmacy services, ensuring that patients can continue to receive prescriptions and care even during times of crisis.
The van will improve access to medications for thousands of patients, particularly those managing chronic illnesses, behavioral health needs, and maternal health. It will also provide pharmacist consultations, strengthen outcomes through case management support, and help patients prepare for and manage their ongoing care. By delivering prescriptions to MAHEC’s rural clinics, the van will also bridge gaps for communities with limited or no pharmacy services.
Beyond daily care, the Mobile Pharmacy will serve as a critical lifeline during natural disasters, ensuring continuity of care when pharmacies are closed or inaccessible. It also offers a sustainable, scalable model for rural pharmacy care—one that can be replicated across other underserved regions.
Currently under construction, the van builds on BBF’s earlier partnership with MAHEC following Hurricane Helene, when emergency support helped restore clinical services disrupted by the storm.
