Continuing Care After the California Wildfires
In the aftermath of the devastating wildfires that swept through California earlier this year, BBF’s grant to Vida Mobile Clinic helped deliver essential healthcare and recovery resources to those who lost homes, jobs, and stability. Based in the San Fernando Valley, Vida has remained a lifeline for residents navigating both the physical and emotional toll of the fires.
Through BBF’s support, Vida reached more than 500 individuals affected by the Altadena Eaton Fire, providing not only medical care but also tools to support long-term health, including blood pressure monitors, walkers, and other critical supplies. The organization also strengthened ties with local community groups, deepening its ability to connect with those most in need.
While the grant initially focused on acute and medium-term recovery, it has also fostered lasting relationships between Vida and fire survivors. Many residents continue to rely on Vida for care and resources months later—particularly communities of color who faced greater barriers to assistance. “The cameras are gone, and so is the help,” one resident shared, “but Vida keeps showing up.”
Data from the Eaton Fire Collaborative underscores the ongoing struggle:
- 72% of renters remain in need of housing
- 45% of homeowners remain displaced and need housing
- 68% of renters and 82% of homeowners lost their homes completely
- 91% of renters and nearly 50% of homeowners were uninsured or underinsured
These statistics highlight the critical importance of continued support for affected families. For Vida, the response has evolved into a long-term commitment—one that extends far beyond immediate recovery.
“The funds provided truly helped us connect with the victims of the Eaton Fire. We not only were boots on the ground for these individuals, but also were able to establish and maintain partnerships due to the funds.” – Vida Mobile Clinic
BBF is proud to have played a role in sustaining this compassionate, community-based work. Together with partners like Vida Mobile Clinic, BBF continues to ensure that health and hope reach those rebuilding their lives after disaster.
