Bringing Life-Saving Medicines to Mali

By Liam Carstens, Vice President of Programs

We recently received feedback from our longstanding partner, Life for Relief and Development, regarding a 40-foot container of medicine, equipment, and medical supplies that arrived in Mali, West Africa. Packed with hospital equipment and essential medicines for conditions like high blood pressure, hypertension, neurological disorders, and bacterial infections, this shipment is already making a difference in people’s lives.

A retired teacher who received two months of needed medicines for free after enduring prolonged shortages stated: “I have been living with high blood pressure for more than a decade. Before, it was very hard to find the right medication at our local health center, and when it was available, it was too expensive for someone like me, living on a small pension. I often went without treatment for weeks, which made me dizzy and tired, and I was always afraid of having a stroke.”

The aid reached 14 medical centers across Kangaba, Balan Bakama, Benkadi, Kaniogo, Karan, Marandougou, Narena, and Selefougou, benefiting an estimated 16,000 patients. Local healthcare teams, in close coordination with the Mali Ministry of Health, ensured that every item was properly distributed and used.

According to our partners at Life for Relief and Development:

“The performance of the medicine distribution initiative across 14 medical centers, serving an estimated 16,000 beneficiaries, was shaped by several key factors. First, effective coordination and planning ensured that the right quantities of essential medicines were delivered based on population needs and disease prevalence. The strength of the local health workforce, including trained nurses, pharmacists, and community health workers, played a critical role in ensuring proper handling, storage, and administration of the medicines.  Lastly, collaboration with local authorities and health committees fostered ownership and long-term sustainability of the program. These combined factors contributed to the successful delivery of essential healthcare services to thousands of vulnerable individuals across the 14 targeted centers… The distribution of essential medicines and vaccines has had a significant and transformative impact on communities across Mali, particularly in underserved rural and conflict-affected areas. By ensuring timely access to life-saving treatments, the program has contributed to a notable reduction in child mortality, especially from preventable diseases.”

This work highlights BBF’s commitment to collaborating closely with local partners to identify needed items and coordinate effective distributions.  All of us at BBF are grateful for these partnerships that have delivered assistance to those in need.

Finally, a mother of a young child shared her perspective on this donation from BBF: “The health center in our village has what we need. When my baby got sick again recently, I was able to take him to the clinic and get free medicine right away. He recovered in just a few days. I am so grateful. This help has brought peace of mind to mothers like me who used to feel helpless.”
