Investing in Education for a Brighter Future

Summer Series, Week 6

Education has long been a pillar of BBF’s global work, grounded in the belief that access to learning opens the door to opportunity. The BBF Education Program traces its roots to a 1961 medical mission to Liberia. While there, Mrs. Gussie Hingson—wife of BBF founder Dr. William Hingson—recognized that many schools were operating without even the most basic educational materials. In response, BBF launched its first education-focused initiative, sending 100,000 donated textbooks to Liberia in 1962. Since then, the program has expanded to include not only the distribution of educational materials but also support for rebuilding and repairing schools impacted by hurricanes and other disasters.

BBF’s Education Program supports learning environments in underserved communities through a wide range of initiatives. These include providing textbooks, classroom supplies, tablets, and computers, as well as rebuilding and rehabilitating schools damaged by natural disasters. By equipping computer labs, supplying libraries, and increasing access to STEM and workforce development programs, BBF works to strengthen education systems and open doors for learners at every stage.

In 2024, BBF partnered with organizations in Ghana, the Philippines, Honduras, Turkey, Ukraine, and Malawi to support schools and community-based programs. In Pittsburgh, BBF continued its investment in local students by supplying school supplies and promoting digital literacy in classrooms. These efforts are tailored to the specific needs of each community, with a focus on long-term impact and sustainability.

By expanding access to quality education, BBF is helping young people reach their potential and building stronger, more resilient communities around the world.
