Pianist Dr. Taras Filenko took the stage with several Ukrainian artists at Manchester Craftsman’s Guild Jazz in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for a concert that raised money for BBF Global Relief’s ongoing Ukraine response. The evening combined Ukrainian music, poetry and paintings with Dr. Filenko’s commentary on Ukrainian composers and culture, immersing the audience in the rich art that formed out of Ukraine’s history of suppression and conflict.

The concert, “Standing Against the Suppression of Expression,” featured some of Pittsburgh’s most talented musicians, including violinist Marta Krechkovsky and clarinetist Victoria Luperi from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and Pauline Rovkah, the head of the piano program at Chatham University. Ostap Stakhiv, a former recipient of the Honored Artist of Ukraine award, played the Bandura, a plucked string instrument used in many Ukrainian folk songs that also serves as a national symbol of resistance.

The event raised more than $10,000 for BBF’s ongoing relief efforts in Ukraine. BBF is deeply grateful for the continued support received from the Pittsburgh community over the past few years.
