Solar Power Expands Educational Opportunity in Rural Zambia
Access to reliable electricity remains a major barrier for many rural schools, limiting classroom instruction, access to technology, and opportunities for student growth. In Simoonga Village, Zambia, Brother’s Brother Foundation helped address that challenge through a grant supporting the installation of a solar power system at Daltorio School.
The BBF-funded project provided a 10-panel solar power system, bringing dependable, renewable electricity to the school and improving daily learning conditions for students and staff. With consistent lighting and electrical access now available, the school has strengthened its educational environment while reducing reliance on less sustainable energy sources.
The impact of the project has extended beyond the school itself. According to the final grant report, the solar installation has encouraged neighboring communities to consider solar energy as a practical solution for their own energy needs, helping promote broader interest in clean energy development in the region.
The project is also expected to support future educational expansion. School leaders shared plans to establish a computer lab, using the new power infrastructure to help address technology illiteracy in the rural community and create new learning opportunities for students.
BBF’s support also contributed to continued progress on a boarding school currently under construction at Daltorio School. While the facility is not yet complete, the building effort has already created more than 100 direct and indirect jobs within the local community. Once finished, the expanded campus is expected to provide greater access to education for vulnerable children in surrounding rural areas, with enrollment projected to grow by more than 500 students.
Overall, the community project has already directly impacted more than 400 lives, reflecting the broader role that infrastructure investments can play in strengthening access to education, creating economic opportunity, and supporting long-term community development.
