Supporting Vida Mobile Clinic’s Response to California Wildfires

As devastating wildfires swept through California in January, communities in the San Fernando Valley faced widespread destruction, displacement, and worsening health conditions. For many residents, particularly those without health insurance, access to medical care became even more difficult. In response, BBF has awarded a grant to Vida Mobile Clinic to support their efforts in providing critical healthcare services to those impacted by the fires.

Vida Mobile Clinic was founded in May 2020 by physician assistants Ana Ruiz-Pena and Karla Rugamas, who bonded over shared experiences of witnessing the challenges their families faced in navigating the healthcare system. What began as a volunteer-run free clinic operating just three days a month has grown into a vital resource for underserved and uninsured individuals in the region. In addition to offering medical care, Vida also runs a Pre-Health Career Enrichment Program, providing students from under-resourced backgrounds with hands-on experience and leadership opportunities to help them pursue careers in healthcare.

The recent wildfires have intensified the need for Vida’s services, as residents struggle with the physical and emotional toll of displacement, smoke inhalation, and loss of personal belongings. With BBF’s support, Vida Mobile Clinic will be able to continue its weekly clinic days and expand outreach efforts, ensuring that those most affected receive the medical attention they need. The grant will help Vida provide direct patient care, distribute medications, and supply critical health resources to displaced individuals.

Vida’s response has already made a tangible impact. A few weeks ago, Karla Rugamas organized a clinic event in the San Gabriel Valley to serve fire-affected families, offering medical care and essential resources to more than 100 individuals, including their pets. This past weekend, Vida distributed over 150 hygiene kits, medications, and health information at St. Phillip the Apostle Church in Pasadena, providing relief to those struggling in the aftermath of the fires. As Vida continues coordinating with local organizations and officials to expand these efforts, BBF’s grant will help ensure they have the resources to meet the growing needs of their community.
