BBF Responds to Afghanistan Earthquake

In September 2025, a powerful earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Kunar Province, devastating villages, destroying homes, and leaving hundreds of families without food or shelter. In the aftermath, BBF provided a grant to Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) to deliver urgently needed food assistance to families affected by the disaster.

BBF’s grant provided immediate food security to 150 households whose lives had been upended by the earthquake. Within days, on-the-ground assessments in coordination with local authorities, community elders, and shura councils identified the most vulnerable families. From September 8–10, food baskets were distributed to 150 households across several earthquake-affected villages.

Each family received a comprehensive food basket designed to meet their nutritional needs for several weeks. The baskets included 50 kilograms of flour, 10.5 kilograms of rice, 7 kilograms each of macaroni, chickpeas, sugar, and semolina, 10 packets of salt, and 5 liters of cooking oil. The food assistance helped families get through the immediate crisis and meet their basic needs.

In total, the response reached 1,050 individuals, with an estimated 500 additional community members benefiting indirectly through shared food and reduced local market strain. For many, this support represented the first reliable access to food since the disaster. Families reported a profound sense of relief, particularly women-led households and those with young children. Items such as semolina and macaroni proved especially valuable for preparing quick, nutritious meals for children.

LIFE’s team faced two primary challenges: road blockages caused by landslides and damage, and ongoing security concerns. Some remote villages were initially inaccessible due to debris and collapsed roads. To reach them, the team employed smaller vehicles and worked with local transporters familiar with alternate routes. Distributions were conducted only during daylight hours with the help of community elders to ensure safe and orderly operations.

Despite these obstacles, all activities were completed safely, on schedule, and without incident. LIFE maintained close coordination with Kunar Provincial authorities, the Ministry of Economy, and district officials, ensuring transparency in family selection and effective use of resources. By aligning efforts with other humanitarian actors, the organization also avoided duplication of aid and maximized impact for the affected communities.

Through BBF’s grant, 150 families received lifesaving food assistance during one of the most difficult times of their lives. The response not only met immediate needs but also strengthened community resilience and coordination with local authorities.
