Hurricane Melissa Response in Jamaica
Hurricane Melissa made landfall on October 28, 2025, as a Category 5 storm with sustained winds exceeding 185 miles per hour. The storm caused widespread destruction across the island, including severe flooding, landslides, power and water outages, infrastructure damage, and significant agricultural losses.
BBF has provided grants to Food For The Poor and Cross Catholic Outreach to support emergency relief and recovery efforts in Jamaica following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa.
Through its grant to Food For The Poor, BBF is supporting large scale disaster response and logistics operations across Jamaica. Food For The Poor is coordinating the staging, warehousing, and nationwide distribution of food, medical supplies, hygiene items, building materials, and water purification systems. In areas where roads remain inaccessible due to flooding and landslides, airlift operations using Jamaican and U.S. military helicopters are delivering food and water to isolated communities.
BBF’s grant to Cross Catholic Outreach is supporting emergency health and disaster response efforts. Cross Catholic Outreach is coordinating the delivery of food, medicine, and medical supplies to affected areas, including exploring airlift options for critical health resources. As emergency response continues and recovery planning begins, BBF’s support is helping partners address immediate humanitarian needs while laying the groundwork for longer term rebuilding, including shelter, health services, and restoration of essential infrastructure.
