A donation of pharmaceuticals from BBF Global Relief helped Cutting Edge Relief, a Pittsburgh-based organization that performs medical outreach in underserved areas, provide care to more than 700 people in a rural town in Honduras.

Laurel Houck, a registered nurse who has taken medical mission trips for the past 15 years, traveled with Cutting Edge Relief to Urrocco, Honduras. She describes the town as a hub for “a number of very small, very poor, rural villages.” Residents in the area don’t have access to any healthcare.

BBF’s Med-Surg program donates pharmaceuticals to healthcare providers traveling to countries where medical resources are limited. Medications are sent domestically to mission groups and are hand-carried into countries by medical providers who have prescriptive authority. The program helps medical mission groups overcome the logistical and cost difficulties that come with having to buy medications on on-site.

BBF Global Relief provided Cutting Edge Relief with more than 350 units of medication, a total value of more than $9,000. Medical professionals used the medications along with education about healthy diet and lifestyle changes to treat diabetes, high blood pressure and chronic pain.

“We had to use medications to at least get the ball rolling, so we could start getting the disease under control,” Houck says.

Diclofenac Sodium gel, used to treat pain and arthritis, was particularly helpful in treating back pain caused by manual labor.

“For the average day to day rural Honduran, pain is a reality and there’s no way to get away from it,” Houck says. “By providing the diclofenac gel, it was really helpful in giving them some relief from the pain so that they could do other things then hopefully to move on and help themselves.”
