Supporting Wildfire Recovery for Native Communities in Los Angeles

United American Indian Involvement, Inc. (UAII) has been providing critical support to Native American families and others affected by recent wildfires in Los Angeles. In response to the devastation, BBF has provided a grant to UAII to expand its wildfire relief efforts, ensuring that displaced individuals and families have access to essential resources, medical care, and housing support.

UAII has been a central force in wildfire relief, transforming its Temple Street facility into an emergency shelter where individuals and families could find temporary housing, meals, medical assistance, and mental health support. Their efforts have extended beyond immediate shelter, with the creation of The People’s Store, a community resource providing food, clothing, toiletries, and personal protective equipment. Operating Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, the store serves as a lifeline for those who lost homes and belongings in the fires.

To meet the medical and emotional needs of wildfire survivors, UAII deployed mobile outreach clinics, offering medical, dental, and mental health services. They also organized a Community Prayer and Healing Circle to provide spiritual and emotional support to those coping with the aftermath of the disaster. In addition, UAII provided aid to the Navajo Interagency Hot Shot Crew, ensuring that the firefighters battling the wildfires received care packages and messages of encouragement from Native youth.

Recognizing the long-term challenges of recovery, UAII has partnered with various agencies to secure housing for displaced individuals. Their team continues to provide case management services, workforce development programs, and healthcare access to support families as they rebuild their lives.

BBF’s grant will help UAII expand these services as part of the second phase of their LA Wildfire Relief plan. This includes strengthening their community store, where individuals can access essential supplies such as food, clothing, baby formula, and diapers. Additionally, UAII will continue to offer health clinic services, housing placement assistance, and job readiness programs to ensure that those affected by the fires have the support they need to recover.
