BBF Grant Helps Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank Meet Rising Demand
As demand for food assistance continues to rise across southwestern Pennsylvania, a grant from Brother’s Brother Foundation is helping the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank sustain essential services for thousands of individuals and families facing food insecurity.
Founded in 1980, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank serves 11 counties throughout southwestern Pennsylvania and distributes more than 53 million meals each year through a network of more than 1,000 agencies, partners, and programs. As a member of Feeding America, the Food Bank works to address hunger through a comprehensive approach that combines food distribution with nutrition access, SNAP enrollment assistance, partner support, and advocacy aimed at addressing the root causes of food insecurity.
In March 2026, Brother’s Brother Foundation awarded a grant to support the Food Bank’s continued operations during a period of increased community need and ongoing reductions in federal funding. The funding was intended to help sustain food distribution efforts while providing the flexibility needed to respond to changing conditions across the region.
According to the organization’s recent impact report, that strategy has remained consistent throughout the grant period. As demand has continued to outpace available resources, the Food Bank has placed even greater emphasis on maintaining strong food distribution through its partner network while prioritizing access to fresh, nutritious foods and strengthening the capacity of local partner agencies. Flexible funding has allowed the organization to respond to evolving needs while maintaining critical services for the communities it serves.
To date in fiscal year 2026, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank has distributed 43.8 million pounds of food, including 17.8 million pounds of fresh produce, to families, children, and seniors throughout its 11-county service area. Brother’s Brother Foundation’s grant has helped sustain this level of distribution, ensuring partner organizations can continue providing reliable access to nutritious food in their communities.
