BBF Grant Supports Expanded Health Services in Malawi

MMH Grant Report

A grant from Brother’s Brother Foundation (BBF) supported several key health initiatives at Mulanje Mission Hospital in Malawi, strengthening services in maternal and reproductive health, HIV care, eye health, and malaria prevention for the communities the hospital serves.

One focus of the grant was improving maternal and reproductive health services. Funding supported reproductive health supplies and family planning services used at the hospital and during outreach clinics in surrounding communities. The project also expanded cervical cancer screening, with additional healthcare workers trained to provide screening and early detection services both at the hospital and in outreach settings.

The grant also supported professional training for clinical staff, strengthening the hospital’s ability to manage complex reproductive health conditions. This included advanced academic training for a nursing and midwifery officer and specialized surgical training that allows certain fistula cases to be treated locally rather than requiring referrals to distant hospitals.

In addition, the grant strengthened eye care services at Mulanje Mission Hospital. Salary support for Eye Clinic staff has helped expand services beyond cataract surgery to include vision screening and access to eyeglasses. Community screening events and outreach clinics have increased access to eye care for patients in nearby villages, and the hospital has recently completed a dedicated eye theatre to support surgical services.

The project also helped sustain HIV and tuberculosis services, ensuring continuity of care for patients receiving treatment and testing. These services remain essential in the Mulanje region, where HIV prevalence remains high.

Finally, the grant contributed to malaria prevention efforts, supporting an indoor spraying campaign in villages throughout the district.
