BBF Supports Diagnostic Care at St. Patrick’s Health Centre in Malawi

BBF provided a grant for the purchase of an ultrasound machine for St. Patrick’s Health Centre in Rumphi, Malawi, helping strengthen the facility’s ability to diagnose and treat patients in a rural region where medical resources are limited. The health center will use the equipment to help reduce infant, maternal, and cardiac mortality in the surrounding communities.

St. Patrick’s Health Centre provides a range of care including 24 hour emergency services, inpatient and outpatient care, maternal and child health services, laboratory and pharmacy services, and specialized departments in general medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and palliative care. The center also runs community health programs addressing communicable diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV, as well as non communicable conditions including hypertension and diabetes. Outreach activities and medical camps extend services to villages throughout the region.

Despite the commitment of staff and the growing demand for care, access to diagnostic equipment has been a major challenge.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, and healthcare resources are especially limited in remote villages. The team at St. Patrick’s shared that, despite their strong commitment to providing quality care, they have faced significant challenges because they lacked essential equipment. For more than a year, they had been trying to secure an ultrasound machine to strengthen the services they could offer their community.

With support from BBF, the ultrasound machine has now arrived and been installed at the facility.

“I am delighted to share with you the good news that our Ultrasound Machine has been brought to St Patrick’s Health Centre Rumphi,” wrote Sr. Dr. Lissy of St. Patrick’s Health Centre.  “I really have no words to thank you enough.”

The addition of ultrasound capability will allow clinicians to better monitor pregnancies, detect complications earlier, and diagnose a range of medical conditions without requiring patients to travel long distances to larger hospitals. For communities in and around Rumphi, the new equipment represents an important step toward strengthening access to essential healthcare services.
