Expanding Food Access in South Los Angeles

UCHC

BBF Supports Universal Community Health Center

Access to nutritious food remains a challenge for many families in South Los Angeles, where economic hardship and food insecurity have been exacerbated by recent wildfires and job displacement. To help address this ongoing need, BBF has provided a grant to Universal Community Health Center (UCHC) to support their food distribution program, ensuring that low-income, uninsured, and underinsured individuals have access to essential nutrition.

As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), UCHC provides comprehensive medical, behavioral health, and care coordination services to underserved communities. Recognizing that food insecurity is a major social determinant of health, they operate a food distribution program that serves thousands of individuals and families who struggle to afford balanced meals. While UCHC already receives fresh produce donations, this funding will allow them to purchase dry goods, non-perishable staples, and culturally relevant food items, expanding their ability to provide a more complete and sustainable food supply for those in need.

This grant will enable UCHC to enhance its pantry offerings by incorporating grains, proteins, and shelf-stable essentials, ensuring that families relying on food distributions have access to well-rounded nutrition. In addition to strengthening their food assistance efforts, UCHC will also use a portion of the funding to expand outreach initiatives, improve access to nutrition education, and assist families with benefit enrollment.

BBF’s grant will provide critical operating support to UCHC’s food distribution program, helping to sustain and expand services for those most affected by economic and environmental hardships. By investing in both direct food assistance and community-based initiatives, this funding will help UCHC build a more resilient, food-secure future for South Los Angeles.
